To gain insight into how accurately the point spreads proposed by sportsbooks capture the median margin of victory, we used a large sample of matches. For each match, we analyzed the distribution of the median margin of victory and the point spread. We found that the distribution of the median margin of victory deviates significantly from the point spread, indicating that sportsbooks do not always propose values that maximize their expected profit. However, for the most popular games in our sample, the distribution of the median margin of victory closely resembles the point spread, suggesting that sportsbooks can be more accurate when making these bets.
